Chris took part in the 2019 Simply Health Great North Run, a half-marathon from Newcastle to South Shields. There were 57,000 people signed up (not a typo, just about the population of Bermuda) and there was incredible support from the north-east community all along the course. This was Chris’ first race longer than 5K so the main goal was to finish and he achieved that, finishing in 2 hours and 25 minutes. The race was covered on the BBC (link) and was won by Sir Mo Farah for the 6th straight year. To give some perspective on the size of the race, Sir Mo was more than halfway through the course before Chris had even crossed the start line – it took 30 minutes from the starting pistol for the green wave in pen “I” to get to the start line. The final mile and a bit was along the sea front in South Shields and there was a great atmosphere with people lining both sides of the road all the way through the finish.
We stayed with the Cranstons this weekend and had a fabulous time with Dougie, Dawn, Ally, Iona and Mac and a great day with the Marshes (Lee, Nicola, Max and Rudy). The kids got along so well and our two didn’t want to leave! Dawn ran the GNR and her and Dougie’s tips and insights were a huge help in getting Chris around the course.
