After the success of the Gold Cup campaign earlier this summer and the additional coverage of our Bermudian footballers, we’ve been following a few who are in the English league. Osagi Bascome and Justin Donawa both play for Darlington FC in the Vanarama National League North. Darlington is about 40 miles from where we are staying this week near Derwent and were playing their first match of the 2019/20 season last night against Gateshead so we thought we’d take the opportunity to show our support for our fellow Bermudians and drive down to watch.
The staff at Darlington were really friendly and our Bermuda jerseys were a conversation starter (as were the woolly hats on the kids in “summer”). The match finished 1-1 and Justin came on in the 66th minute, adding some energy to the Darlington attack and played a part in the move which led to the equaliser.
The highlight, however, was getting Osagi’s attention in the warm down and he came over to say hello and do an autograph and picture with the kids. When Justin joined the warm down, Osagi pointed us out and he came over to do the same. The kids were really excited to meet professional footballers and both Osagi and Justin were generous with their time. A big thank you to them both and we wish them best of luck for the rest of the season.
