UPDATE: It’s July and we’re on the move again! We celebrated 3 birthdays under stay-at-home orders, we’ve had to alter our plans a number of times and roll with the punches (South America isn’t happening), but we’ve decided to explore some national parks and do some camping before we leave the USA in less than 3 weeks. Let the adventure continue…

From March/April: Things are quite crazy at the moment as most people around the world can probably attest. We had to cancel the Asia portion of our gap year due to Covid-19, and it was challenging getting from New Zealand to the US. Luckily, we didn’t get stranded in the process. Our future plans are a little hazy with all of the travel restrictions and cancellations impacting our original plans to head to Colorado and then eventually California. We’re trying to be flexible at the moment and posts may be few and far between as we navigate the next few weeks. Sending lots of love to all our family and friends around the world. Stay safe!

The Brough Family – Chris, Melissa, Maggie and CJ – are embarking on a Family Gap Year.
Before we start, a word on the name of our site – Broughing It. “Roughing It” would be sacrificing the modern comforts and conveniences, going with the most economical options in all aspects of our travels. Whilst we are budget conscious, there are some comforts and conveniences that we don’t want to live without, so we are “Broughing It”. We encounter a fairly wide range of variations on our surname, so to clear it up (and make the website name make sense in the context of our play on “roughing it”) – ‘Brough’ rhymes with ‘rough’, ‘tough’ and ‘enough’ (i.e. “Bruff”) and does not rhyme with ‘dough’ or ‘though’.
We are looking forward to this adventure and sharing our experiences – good, bad and indifferent – with you.
